The Rise of Asian Stars




Ten years ago, my British friend - Tommy only knew two Asian stars: Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Recently, I have received a call from him, asking me: “Do you know Gem Tang and Hua Chengyu (Chinese singers)?” and “Have you heard the scandals of Lee Seung Hyun (Korean singer)?”. To be honest, I was astonished by the questions he asked because I couldn’t imagine why a foreigner could be more familiar with the Asian entertainment news than me. Undoubtedly, the reasons of why Asian stars becoming more influential can be attributed to the popularity of social networking sites, the rise of economic power in the Asia and the Asian stars’ enthusiasm in participating international events.



With the help from social networking sites, celebrities gain their popularity more easily. Social networking sites such as Youtube, Facebook and Instagram allow people to register their own channels and share their videos and photos to the public. Take a famous Chinese reality show – I Am a Singer as an example, its production team had registered a personal channel on Youtube before it was broadcast on the TV. By sharing the video on Youtube, the audience around the globe, especially from the foreigner countries can watch the show more easily and the participated singers can gain their popularity from it within a short period of time. Let’s imagine, without the help from social networking sites, how can the singers gain their popularity in an easy way if the show can only be broadcast on Chinese TV channel?



Because of the rise of economic power in the Asia, lots of Asian celebrities get the chance to collaborate with the global business company and gain their popularity outside of Asia. Since the Asian countries have more potential for development, it attracts the global business parties to put more focus on it so as to make a huge profit. In order to attract the Asian buyers, the company will choose famous Asian celebrities to be their product endorsers and the celebrities can gain publicity by showcasing the well-known brand. For instance, a famous sports brand – Adidas has recently invited Eddie Pang, a talented and gorgeous Asian actor to be their product endorser. With the right strategy, Adidas has successfully earned a huge profit in an Asian market and Eddie has gained his popularity outside of Asia.



Moreover, Asian celebrities attend the international events actively nowadays. Generally, one of the effective ways used by celebrities to gain popularity is to get a lot of exposure. Through joining the international events such as movie festivals, charity shows and fashion shows, celebrities can get more exposure and gain popularity by showing off their luxury accessories and dresses. For example, G-Dragon who is the vocalist from the hottest South Korean Band, attended CHANEL fashion show few months ago. His fashionable outfit caught lots of people’s eyes ranging from the general public to celebrities from the other countries, and helped him gain the popularity not only from the Asia, but also the Europe and the USA.



To conclude, the development of Asian countries is rising gradually. In view of the popularity of the social networking sites, the rise of economic power in the Asia and Asian stars’ frequent participation in the international events, those Asian faces get more chances to impress the people from the other regions and successfully gain their popularity at the end.
