(ii) 高山地區較多雨, 盛行風來自東面, 因高地造成屏障, 促使氣流上升, 形成地形雨, 新界西北部最少雨/沿岸低 5/9 (5)

3. (a) X is a low pressure system.
(b) (i) Y is a trough of low pressure.
(ii) The trough would bring relatively low air pressure to Hong Kong, air currents would converge along the trough line. Strong winds would start to blow. The resultant updrafts would form thick clouds. The weather would turn bad with squally showers and thunderstorms. The relative humidity would rise while the temperature would slightly fall.
(iii) The heavy downpours could result in disasters. Floods might occur in low-lying areas. Landslides might happen on unstable slopes. All these could lead to loss of lives or properties. Traffic jams or accidents might happen. Outdoor activities would be inconvenienced or cancelled. People might not be able to go to work or school if the red or black warning signal of rainstorms is issued.
(c) (i) The south-eastern part of the New Territories has less than 2400mm of annual rainfall. The annual rainfall increases towards inland,  reaching a peak of 2800mm at Ma On Shan and another peak of 3200mm in Tai Mo Shan. In the north-western part of the New Territories, the annual rainfall drops to below 2000mm.
(ii) The rainfall pattern described above is a result of the relief of the New Territories as well as the prevailing wind direction. There is obviously more rain in the upland area. The prevailing winds in Hong Kong generally blow from the east. When they meet the hills, they are forced to rise and form relief rain. On the leeward side of the hills, the rainshadow effect is felt. On descending the leeward slope, the winds are already dry. Adiabatic warming leads to a decrease in relative humidity and less chance of rainfall.
