也許，你有這一個經驗：為了物超所值，於自助餐不停進食食物，去到肚滿腸肥的剎那，仍然命令自己進食。不幸吃得壞肚皮，辛苦地躺在病床上，聽到新聞報導世界糧食短缺，糧食危機有如危急存亡之秋，你打從心底懊悔，下定決心洗心革面。可惜之後又故態復萌，於不同的領域造成大量浪費。
「得不償失」。也許很多道德家會譴責人人目光如豆，不懂從長遠的眼光去看待事物，結果短期獲益，長遠虧損，得不償失。然而，筆者不得不為世人辯護，根據演化生物學的研究，人的短視和貪婪，漠視長遠以致得不償失，是物競天擇下，人類為求於天災期間生存，而衍生的性格。
